Why I’m Finally Embracing Consistency (And Why It Took Me This Long)

Jan 21 / Shelley Lewis
Consistency doesn’t mean boring. Discover how daily habits create emotional clarity, momentum, and results - especially for ambitious professionals.

For years, I wore inconsistency like a badge of honour.

I thrived on novelty. I was the disruptor - the one who refused to settle into routine, who chased inspiration, who liked to mix things up. Sticking to a predictable schedule? Meh. That was for other people.

Consistency seemed… Boring. Rigid. Ordinary.

But somewhere between the unfinished hobbies, the half-read books, and the enthusiasm that always seemed to fizzle out, I started to wonder:
What was I actually building?
What was I completing, nurturing, or sustaining?

Spoiler: not much.

The Year Consistency Chose Me

This year, I didn’t just make resolutions. I picked a theme: consistency.

Not “more.” Not “better.” Just… consistent.
To be honest, it didn’t feel exciting at all. It felt dull - like I was opting for a life of oatmeal and early bedtimes. But something deeper was whispering that this might be exactly what I needed.

And then something weird happened.

The word consistency kept showing up.
Books. Podcasts. Conversations. Even a line in a TV show.
At first, I chalked it up to coincidence. But when the same word appears twice a day for ten straight days? That’s no longer chance. That’s a message.

So, I listened.

And I stayed the course.

From Flashy Starts to Quiet Commitment

Now, here we are - well past the second Friday of January (aka Quitter’s Day), and for the first time ever, I didn’t abandon my intentions.

No dramatic overhaul. No spreadsheet marathon.
Just one foot in front of the other.

Here’s what I’ve learned:
Consistency isn’t about perfection.
It’s about presence.
It’s about removing the daily decision fatigue and simply doing what aligns with your values - even when it’s not sexy or exciting.

It’s how unfinished becomes completed.
How chaos becomes clarity.
How dreams - yes, even the big ones - actually get built.

An Unexpected Apology

So to the commuters of the 8:03 AM GO Train from Clarkson back in the early 2000s - the ones whose seat I “stole” because I never took the same train two days in a row?

I see you now.
I understand you.
And, sincerely… I’m sorry.

Turns out there’s something grounding - something deeply powerful - about showing up the same way, at the same time, with the same quiet determination.

That’s not boring. That’s brave.

What’s Your Word for 2025?

Maybe it’s consistency. Maybe it’s courage. Maybe it’s clarity.
Whatever it is, pick a word that stretches you - not overwhelms you.

And if you’re looking for support in staying the course with your goals - gently but powerfully - I’m here. Through coaching, tools, or future programs, I’d love to help you build momentum in a way that feels both grounded and real.

Here’s to a year of quiet progress and strong foundations.
